Parents: your children should have brought home their art from the year in the last few days. Hope you enjoy looking at all the masterpieces they have created all year!
Our art lesson last week was inspired by the work of Rosalie Gascoigne and her 'Tiger Tiger' collage, which was created from chopped up road signs arranged in deliberate collage patterns. Everyone decided on a theme for their collage, from typography to celebrities, brands, animals, eyes and mouths, toys, patterns and colours! We collected a wide range of magazines and flicked through them to find images and text related to our theme. Everyone got a small square of thick card which they then traced around and then cut out the pieces. We aimed for a 7x7 collage (with 49 squares), though some people made ones a little smaller. They turned out very well, colourful and exciting!

Tying in with our project on health and fitness for life, we have been learning a lot about healthy eating recently. As a treat, we got to make fruit salad on Friday. We used a variety of fruit to prepare the salad, and then added orange juice before digging in! Delicious! Afterwards, we took the chance to revise procedural writing by writing out the recipe.

Margaret and Aine were our tour guides. We watched a video of Anna and Catherine Gregory, who were children who lived in Coole house . We went upstairs to their nursery and played "hunt the thimble" . After that we went outside and we had to find leaves of different type of trees. We had lunch in the "Walled Garden" and played games for half an hour, then we got on the bus and headed for City Limits in Oranmore. First at city limits we did quasar. We had to wear a pack that charged the gun. Each pack had a colour so when you were in the dark you could see who was on your team. After we had finished quasar, it turned out the yellow team won! After that we did inflatables there was slides and obstacle courses. Ms.Kirby went down the slide and she raced Caoilainn on the obstacle course! By Isabella and Laura B Our School Tour 15\06\15 On Monday we went on our school tour. We had to be at school before 9:15. We went to Coole Park first and our tour guides name was Aine. We watched an eduacational video and we played find the thimble, there were 7 of them. After Coole Park we went to City Limits where we were split into two groups and we played Quasar,Inflatables,Bowling and finally we played a couple of games in the arcade. Ben got the highest score in the Dragon Punch. When we got back it was 5:30 and to complete the perfect day the boys got into the final in the hurling!!! By Patrick and Ben This week was Active Schools Week, and we all really enjoyed participating in a wide variety of activities during the week. Every day, we discussed a quote related to sport and being part of a team. We also did several Go Noodle activities during the week - our favourite being the dance to Pop See Ko 2.0! Shona and Ms. Noonan also had a variety of fun activities organised for each day.
On Monday, our class did a penalty shoot out. The two winners who went on to Mr. Curran in the final were Ben and Brendan, and the overall winner was Brendan. Well done! Tuesday was Sports' Day! We had a great time in the sun. Fourth class participated in sprinting, longer distance running (800m), the three-legged race, the famous 'find your shoes' race and the slow bicycle race. On Wednesday, we had hurling with Luke and also played some fun games with the parachute. We did gymnastics on Thursday, and enjoyed creating routines using balances and forward and backward rolls in groups. Friday, we played co-operative group games and also took part in an obstacle course. It was a great week! Have a look at photos from just some of the activities! In keeping with the Active Schools Week theme (and the theme of our current project, Sport and Health for Life), we worked on paintings of sports balls this week in art. We discussed how to create form and a 3D effect by using light and shade. We built up colours and mixed to create the 3D spheres. Then we discussed how best to display them in the classroom.
Recently, we made tinfoil sculptures in art. First, we sketched gesture drawings to decide the positions our sculptures would be in. Then, we divided a piece of tinfoil into several sections with a marker, to help us see which part would make the head, torso, arms and legs. Moulding the tinfoil into little people was difficult, as the tinfoil proved very delicate. However, we all succeeded in the end! Then, we created a shadow for our tinfoil people, and finally Ms. Kirby adhered them onto a coloured background with the glue gun. What do you think?
Continuing our musical theme after the projects, we created guitars last week. We were inspired by the colourful cubism of Picasso, and explored warm and cool colours. First, we sponge painted a background of either warm or cool colours. When dry, we cut out guitar shapes and then swapped our scraps with another who had painted with different colours. We then created a sound hole and bridge for the guitars using the opposite colour scheme. Finally, we added buttons and gold ribbon for the strings. They look amazing and really brighten up our noticeboard!
Having learned about famous female pilot Amelia Earhart recently, we had great fun experimenting with some paper folding (origami) on Thursday to make paper planes. We realised that sharp, accurate folds are most important to create an effective plane... And then we had to test them out of course! It was great fun!
Recently, we learned about a new type of poetry: kennings. Kennings are like riddles. They describe something without ever saying what it is. Each line of the poem is made of a two-word phrase. The words are joined by a hyphen. The phrase is made up of noun + verb (–ing or –er). The two-word format for a kenning relates to the Old Norse tradition of naming things like weapons, e.g. Skull-Splitter or Blood-Taker. Kennings came into our language via the Anglo-Saxon and Norse cultures. These people came from what is now Scandinavia and northern Germany. The word ‘kenning’ derives from the Old Norse word ‘kenna eitt við’, which means ‘to express a thing in terms of another’.
We even use kennings in everyday language! Examples include sky-scraper and tear-jerker. Poetic devices like alliteration can be used in kennings. They’re best when you read them out loud so you can imagine the thing being described. We wrote kennings about ourselves and then tried to guess who had written them! Can you guess from reading below? |
